Shubman Gill and Akash Deep star for India as the visitors register their first win at the Edgbaston ground on Sunday. Defending 608 runs in the final innings, the question only was if England could get away with a draw and Gill’s men, with precision and strategy, decimated bazzballers on the final day, whose approach and philosophy were questioned by the circumstances of the game situation on the final day. Gill with twin hundreds a double in the first innings led the side with the bat in both innings, while the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Yashasvi Jaiswal chipped in with various contributions through the match. With the ball, it was Mohammed Siraj in the first innings who did the damage with six wickets. In the first innings, although England had two centuries from Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, they still fell a long way away from India’s first innings lead, which took its toll in the second innings. What a thoroughly entertaining Test match it was! No one gave India a chance of levelling the series after Jasprit Bumrah sat out the Edgbaston Test due to workload management. India went in three all-rounders, and many felt the bowling arsenal was not equipped enough to take 20 wickets.
Shubman Gill led from the front, scoring 269 runs in the first innings to help India post 587 runs on the board. Mohammed Siraj then took six wickets as India bundled out England for 407, gaining a lead of 180.
Shubman Gill then again scored a century, aggregating 161 runs in the second innings. India declared their innings at 427/6, setting England a target of 608 runs.
Akash Deep scalped six wickets in the final innings as India bundled out England for 271, winning the contest by 336 runs. As a result, India registered their first-ever Test victory at Edgbaston. Akash Deep took a total of ten wickets in the contest.
